1990 Zoom 9002 Guitar FX Processor

I purchased Zoom 9002 processor because I was traveling all the time for work. I think this was Zoom’s first product although I didn’t pay much attention to that at the time.

This multi-effects unit attached to a guitar strap which made it really easy for me when I was traveling. It also had a small remote that I located on the guitar. This allowed me to change presets like a floor unit. The effects included were: Compressor, Distortion (analogue, valve/tube-type), Equaliser, Pitch-Shifter, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Digital Reverb and Digital Delay. There were two separate variants of both the reverb and the delay. The sound quality was marketed as in keeping with larger rack units, and up to six of the effects could be used simultaneously. The architecture was 16-bit, for the time it had good clarity and fidelity in the delay and reverb.

It also had a very ‘80s feel to the sound, that highly processed digital sound. It was fine for what I purchased it for, practicing while on business trips. I played live with it a few times just to see how it did. It wasn’t really built tough enough to use in gigs. It finally fell apart and went into the trash. Below is the first recording I made with it. This was just noodling around seeing how it felt playing through it.

First test recording playing through the Zoom 9002 in 1990.
